Overview
There are two types of inguinal hernias, adult and pediatric. Adult hernia is usually treated by a general surgeon and pediatric hernia is usually treated by a urologist. Pediatric hernia is due to incomplete closure of inguinal canal during the development of a child. It can close spontaneously after birth but if it remains open it must be surgically repaired. Pediatric hernia usually present inguinal and/ or scrotal swelling.
How to prepare for the procedure
Pediatric hernia repair is performed under general anesthesia. When preparing your child to have a procedure performed under anesthesia you can expect to have your child start fasting the night prior to the procedure. The procedure will be done at an outpatient surgery center.
