What is a kidney cyst?
A kidney cyst is a fluid filled sac that is formed in or on the kidney(s). These may be classified as simple or complex. A cyst classified as simple is benign and usually does not require treatment. Complex cysts have an increased risk of becoming kidney cancer and should be followed. Generally, symptoms will not be present unless the cyst is large and pressing on adjacent structures.
Evaluation
When a cyst has been identified the urologist will perform a complete physical exam, an urine analysis, and further imaging tests to evaluate the exact nature of the cyst.
