Overview
A retrograde pyelogram is a diagnostic test to determine the presence of tumors, stones, or other obstructions in the urinary tract. During a cystoscopy a contrast material is introduced into the ureter via catheter. The contrast material enhances the x-ray pictures and allows visualization of the bladder, ureter(s), and kidney(s).
How to prepare for the test
Retrograde pyelogram is performed under general anesthesia. When preparing to have a procedure performed under anesthesia you can expect to start fasting the night prior to your procedure. Please consult with your surgeon to discuss the pre-operative testing which may include; blood work, chest x-ray, EKG, discontinuation of medications, and clearance for other medical reasons. The procedure will be done at the hospital or outpatient surgery center.
