Overview
Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure. This procedure is done with a small scope known as an ureteroscope; a long and thin instrument that is used to examine the ureters. The ureters are the tubes that permit urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder. Ureteroscopes allow for the doctor to see a stone and/or mass within the ureters. Furthermore the doctor can treat the abnormality via ureteroscope. A stent may be left in after the procedure to help heal the area and may be taken out within 5-10 days.
How to prepare for the procedure
Ureteroscopy is performed under anesthesia. When preparing to have a procedure performed under anesthesia you can expect to start fasting the night prior to your procedure. Please consult with your surgeon to discuss the pre-operative testing which may include; blood work, chest x-ray, EKG, discontinuation of medications, and clearance for other medical reasons. The procedure will be done either at the office or outpatient surgery center.
